Itinerary

Day 1  UK/Irkutsk
Your amazing journey starts the moment you step aboard your overnight flight to Irkutsk.

Day 2: Listvyanka
Having met your Specialist Guide and dropped your luggage off at your hotel in the nearby town of Listvyanka, you’ll get your first taste of this fascinating area with a visit to Lake Baikal. Discover the biological significance of the lake at the Limnological Institute. Then it’s on to a local house, known as a dacha, where lunch will be enjoyed with the family who live there. A short walk along the Angara Dam and through the village of Bolshaya Retshka will work it off before taking a chair lift to the top of a mountain to take in the magnificent views.

Day 3: Lake Baikal
This is the world’s deepest lake and a cruise on it (weather permitting) allows you to truly appreciate its immense size. Returning to dry land, your train will be waiting and porters will be standing by ready to take your luggage straight to your compartment. This is where your magnificent Trans-Siberian adventure begins as you sit back and relax as you head along the lake’s shoreline towards Irkutsk.

Day 4: Irkutsk
The regional capital of Eastern Siberia, Irkutsk is a city full of sights and in particular, a number of historic churches. Take a tour of the city to experience the lively market hall and the drama theatre before staying overnight in a hotel.

Day 5: Trans-Siberia
Rejoining the train you journey through the stunning landscapes of Eastern Siberia today. From your comfortable seat, admire the towering mountains, crystal-clear rivers and lush vegetation through your window. Accompanying your journey will be a series of entertaining talks, shedding a little light on Siberia’s sometimes turbulent history. There will also be a traditionally Russian get-together complete with caviar and vodka.

Day 6: Novosibirsk
As you arrive in the vibrant city of Novosibirsk, you will be greeted with bread, salt and balalaika music in the traditional fashion. A bridge was constructed here over the River Ob during the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway and from that point, the city grew. Explore the old part of the city centre and the embankment where it all began. Your journey then takes you overnight by train to Ekaterinburg.

Day 7: Ekaterinburg
Ekaterinburg is located on the border between Europe and Asia and is the capital of the Ural Mountains. During your discoveries of the city, you’ll visit the Church on Blood, built between 2000 and 2003 on the spot where Tsar Nicholas II and members of his family were executed.

Day 8: Kazan
Just after breakfast today you’ll arrive in the old Tartar capital of Kazan. Sat on the banks of the River Volga, there is plenty of history to be found here and you will be able to immerse yourself in it as you enjoy a little sightseeing. Later on, take a boat trip with lunch on the Volga before re-boarding your train for the final time.

Day 9: Moscow
Your spectacular rail journey ends this morning in Moscow where there is much to enjoy. The oldest part of the city is the red-bricked Kremlin, with its impressive cathedrals and Armoury, which you will get to explore at your own pace. After dinner, enjoy a trip through the city, stopping at Red Square and taking a ride on the Metro to visit two of the beautiful stations.

Day 10: Moscow/UK
There is yet more to see today as you go in search of some of Moscow’s main attractions in the company of your Specialist Guide. Hear the story behind the reconstructed Cathedral of Christ the Saviour; admire Lomonossov University and the New Virgin Monastery; and discover Red Square with its colourful St Basil’s Cathedral, as well as the former KGB headquarters and the White House. Sit back and reflect on all you’ve seen as you head home on your flight back to the UK tonight.

Day 2 – 5 : Albi
Gazing out over the River Tarn, Albi is a historic red-brick town steeped in the history of the religious wars between the Cathars and Crusaders. You can soak up the atmosphere on a guided walk through the medieval streets of the old quarter to see the impressive 13th-century Gothic Cathedral of Ste Cecile. Visible from miles around, this architectural giant dwarfs the town and the sumptuous inner decoration comes as something of a surprise after the austere outer defensive architecture. Albi is also famous as the birthplace of Toulouse Lautrec and art-lovers may want to visit the 13th-century palace containing the most comprehensive collection of his work, which offers stunning views from its beautiful gardens.

Carcasonne & Castres – Get further under the skin of this stunning region as you spend a full day exploring Carcasonne and Castres. Your scenic journey leads you to Carcassonne, one of the most dramatic towns of the Languedoc region, where a breathtaking double walled turreted fortress crowns the hill above the River Aude. This amazing building is the largest fortress in Europe with walls that stretch over two miles, enclosing a maze of medieval streets and museums. Wander through these narrow streets, admire the panoramic views over the countryside from the battlemented walls and explore the beautiful Church of St. Nazaire with its wonderful stained glass and intricate stone carvings. En route to Carcassonne there will be a stop at the pretty town of Castres, where you can take a stroll through the charming riverside quarter to see the old tanners’ and weavers’ houses overhanging the River Agout.

Uncover more of this beautiful region in the company of your fellow travellers:

Ville-Bastides – Perhaps step back in time to the 13th and 14th centuries, when England and France fought for control of south-western France in the Hundred Years War. Many ville-bastides were built around the Dordogne at this time and you cannot fail to get a sense of history when you see their ancient stone walls. An equally romantic vision of the past prevails in Najac, with its photogenic hilltop castle and houses that seem to tumble down to the valley below. Your journey of discovery continues in the amazing town of Cordes, a Cathars stronghold and one of the oldest and best preserved bastides. You may like to wander through the steep cobbled lanes or relax in one of the cafés alongside the locals.

Gaillac & Gorges de l’Aveyon – Wine buffs, or even those who enjoy the odd tipple, will not want to miss the chance to taste some of the region’s fine wines at a local vineyard. Gaillac is an area of magnificent historic towns and villages, and produces delicious wine from locally grown grapes – immerse yourself in French culture by drinking in the heady aromas and learning about the fantastic flavours of local produce. Afterwards the local landscape beckons, urging you to explore the soaring limestone cliffs of the magnificent Gorges de l’Aveyron.

Day 6 : St Cirq-Lapopie, Cahors & Rocamadour
Leave Albi today and take a scenic drive into the Dordogne. Stop at St. Cirq-Lapopie, perched dramatically on a cliff high above the River Lot, where you can join your Tour Guide on a stroll through the cobbled lanes of half-timbered houses, learning about their history as you go. Your exploration of this delightful region continues with a visit to Cahors, famous for its Pont Valentre, one of the few remaining fortified bridges in Europe, as well as its red wine – the only French red wine to use the Malbec grape. Later you reach Rocamadour, built almost vertically into the rocky backdrop of the Alzou Valley. The town gives its name to a small goat’s milk cheese that you may like to try during your two-night stay here.

Day 7 : The Dordogne Valley
Pass honey-coloured riverside cliffs and be awed by exquisitely photogenic villages such as La Roque Gageac, where many of the ochre stone houses are cut from the rock face itself. You’ll also appreciate the bustling market town of Sarlat, known as one of the prettiest towns in France, where there is something new awaiting you around every corner. Be sure to look up at the unusual roofs when you pass through the medieval quarter, where they are often made from ‘lauze’ – carefully cut stone. You also have the opportunity to indulge in a boat trip on the river, watching as the lovely scenery passes by.

Day 8 : Toulouse/UK
Today you will take a coach to Bordeaux station for the TGV service to Lille and onward Eurostar to London St. Pancras or Ebbsfleet.

Itinerary

Day 1 : UK/Annecy
Embark Eurostar at the elegantly restored St. Pancras or Ebbsfleet for your journey to Lille, from where you’ll take the French TGV high speed train southward to Lyon. Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery as the TGV cruises effortlessly at speeds of up to 186mph. From Lyon you’ll travel by local train via Aixle – `Bains towards the beautiful Alps and picturesque Annecy.

Day 2 – 4 : Annecy
One of the most charming and attractive towns in the Rhone, Annecy is built on a maze of canals. With its cobbled streets and stone bridges the traffic-free old town is lined with cafés and restaurants, and boats sail past on the calm waters of Lake Annecy, taking in the amazing views of the Alps overlooking the town.

Explore this delightful area by train, travelling to the mountain grandeur of Chamonix with its superb location under the aweinspiring gaze of Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc. Take a memorable trip on the tramway to the spectacular Mer de Glace glacier, literally a ‘sea of ice’ and France’s longest glacier. This natural phenomenon is a spectacular swathe of ice cutting through the countryside, snaking its way towards striking snow covered mountains above.

Uncover more hidden gems as you visit the picturesque lakeside walled town of Yvoire, situated on the banks of Lake Geneva. With a church dedicated to St. Pancras that dates from the 11th century and remains of the former castle, ramparts and fortified gateways, Yvoire’s past has been miraculously preserved for future generations to enjoy. From this idyllic town you can take a relaxing boat trip to the Swiss city of Geneva, whose ancient Old Town is a maze of sloping cobblestone streets and alleyways filled with cafés, boutiques and historic landmarks at every turn.

Day 5 : Annecy/UK
Following breakfast take your transfer to the station and start your return journey through the heart of Europe back to the UK.
